Disciplinary Breadth (DB) Award for the 2019 Maize Genetics Conference

DB submissions are now closed.
New in 2019, the Disciplinary Breadth (DB) award will provide support for researchers in plant-related disciplines to attend the Maize Genetics Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. We will accept DB applications from December 4, 2018 to January 1, 2019.

Purpose: This program seeks to recruit and retain scientists (advanced graduate students, post-docs, and early-career faculty) from plant-related disciplines into the maize research community by encouraging their attendance at the annual Maize Genetics Conference. The program provides an opportunity for researchers from diverse disciplines that have potential to enrich the maize community to learn about maize genetics by connecting with scientists in the maize genetics community, exploring potential collaborations, and developing career contacts. Examples of diverse disciplines include but are not limited to plant phenomics engineering, biological mathematics, and microbiome science, for example. Awards can be applied to the cost of registration, food, lodging and reimbursement for travel expenses. During the conference, DB awardees will be welcomed by the maize community, and will have opportunities to interact with peers, invited speakers, and program officers from public funding agencies.

DB applicants should 1) fill out the application form, 2) submit a CV, 3) submit a title for a poster or short talk (see below), and 4) provide a short description of their research focus and how attending the MGC will enhance their research. Graduate students and post-docs should include the name and email of their research supervisor. Applicants must be either citizens or permanent residents of the USA. First-time conference attendees are encouraged to apply.

Deadline: For full consideration, DB applications should be submitted by January 1, 2019.

We expect DB applicants to not have previous maize genetics research experience. Submitting an abstract to present a research poster or talk is required, even if it is not directly relevant to maize genetics. Abstract submission will be open until January 25, 2019.

All awardees, including students, post-docs, and faculty, will be required to complete short questionnaires before and after the meeting, and to write a Summary Statement regarding their meeting experience after the close of the conference. Reimbursement checks will be processed and issued upon receipt of the required documentation.

The DB award of the Maize Genetics Conference is supported by the National Science Foundation.
