2020 Maize Genetics Meeting Financial Aid:
There are five types of financial aid for the 62nd Annual Maize Genetics Meeting:
1) Student Registration:
The application deadline will be January 17, 2020.
The steering committee is soliciting federal grants and industry donations to help defray meeting costs for graduate students and for those undergraduates who are the first and presenting author of a poster or talk. When making your hotel room reservation, please select double occupancy at the $229 rate. If the student is eligible for financial aid and fundraising efforts are as successful as in previous years, then the hotel room (half of double occupancy at the $229 rate) for the nights of March 12, 13, and 14 will be paid for upon check out. To apply, a student must:
- Make roommate arrangements (Need help finding a roommate?) to share a double occupancy room with another attendee. Note that the hotel does not collect roommate information upon reservation, but you will be required to supply your roommate's name when registering for the meeting.
- Make reservations at the Sheraton Kona for a $229 double occupancy room (credit card will not be charged until checkout). Only one roommate needs to make the reservation, but the hotel confirmation number needs to be shared with the other roommate. Both roommates will be required to enter the confirmation number when they register for the conference.
- Register for the conference using the online meeting registration form and pay the $150 student registration fee. Be sure to indicate your student status and include the requested additional information about your advisor, etc. You will need to enter your roommate information on the registration form and then supply the confirmation number for the hotel reservation.
Students are actively encouraged to apply for travel awards within their graduate program, college or university. If you have concerns about student financial aid or need information to assist in any local grant application, please do not hesitate to contact the conference chair, Clinton Whipple, at [email protected].
NO applications for student support received after January 17, 2020 will be considered. Please act promptly to assure that your application is received before this deadline.
2) MaGNET:
The MaGNET Awards program will provide competitive support for attendance at the Meeting, for members of underrepresented groups, as well as for faculty mentors accompanying eligible students. We will accept MaGNET applications from November 5 to December 2.
MaGNET Awards can be applied to the cost of attending the Maize Genetics Meeting, including registration, food, lodging and reimbursement for travel expenses. The awardee will be paired with an experienced Maize Mentor, who will help the awardee navigate the conference. During the conference, MaGNET awardees will have opportunities to interact with peers, invited speakers, and will be welcomed by the maize community.
Eligible applicants include: undergraduate students; graduate students; postdoctoral researchers; and early-career faculty and scientists. Applicants must be either citizens or permanent residents of the USA, and should belong to a group traditionally underrepresented in science. First-time conference attendees are encouraged to apply.
3) Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUI)
The PUI award will provide support to attend the Maize Genetics Meeting in Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi, USA. We will accept PUI applications from November 5 to December 2.
This program seeks to recruit and retain scientists from Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs) into the maize research community by encouraging their attendance at the annual Maize Genetics Meeting. The program provides an opportunity for awardees to learn about maize genetics through connecting with scientists in the maize genetics community, explore potential collaborations, and develop career contacts. Awards can be applied to the cost of registration, food, lodging and reimbursement for travel expenses.
Eligible applicants include: undergraduate students currently enrolled at a PUI and PUI faculty. Applicants must be either citizens or permanent residents of the USA. First-time conference attendees are encouraged to apply.
4) Disciplinary Breadth (DB)
The DB award will provide support for researchers in plant-related disciplines to attend the Maize Genetics Meeting in Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi, USA. We will accept DB applications from November 5 to December 2.
This program seeks to recruit and retain scientists (advanced graduate students, post-docs, and early-career faculty) from plant-related disciplines into the maize research community by encouraging their attendance at the annual Maize Genetics Meeting. The program provides an opportunity for researchers from diverse disciplines that have potential to enrich the maize community to learn about maize genetics by connecting with scientists in the maize genetics community, explore potential collaborations, and develop career contacts.
Eligible applicants include: researchers (including graduate students, post-docs, and early-career faculty) from a plant-related discipline. Applicants must be either citizens or permanent residents of the USA. First-time conference attendees are encouraged to apply.
5) Maize gene structure and function annotation jamboree
Deadline has been extended to Tuesday December 10th!
The maize gene annotation jamboree award will provide support to graduate students and faculty interested in course development to participate in the annotation jamboree prior to the Maize Genetics Meeting Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi, USA. We will accept applications from November 5 to December 2.
The goal for jamboree participants is to learn about the soon-to-be-released 26 divergent maize (NAM) genomes, get training in the use of genome annotation tools, and develop student projects to improve the maize reference genomes. Familiarity with genome annotation and databases (such as NCBI, Gramene and MaizeGDB) or in-depth knowledge of maize biology is desirable. Acceptance is competitive and based on the applicant's capacity to use maize genome annotation for student research projects or course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs). Awards can be applied towards the cost of transportation, lodging, and food, and can be combined with other awards aimed to support the applicant's participation at the Maize Genetics Meeting.
Eligible applicants include: graduate students and faculty based in the USA. First-time conference attendees are encouraged to apply.
