Join us to engage with fellow researchers to address how we can improve the health and inclusivity of our communities. The past two years have highlighted underlying pervasive systemic vulnerabilities in our scientific communities: marginalization of historically-excluded groups; assaults on mental health within our research networks; disproportionate stresses and job insecurities for early-career/junior scientists due to the pandemic.

So, where do we go from here? Returning to a 'new normal' requires us to be reflective, envisioning a more equitable and supportive future by engaging all members of our community.

This community-centered workshop will feature panel discussions, breakout sessions, and interactive workshops. Topics include:
  • Navigating issues and impacts related to mental health in the workplace
  • Building positive partnerships among diverse peers
  • Growing inclusive scientific communities
  • Advancing inclusive environments through allyship
Participants will:
  • Gain tools to address immediate needs related to these topics
  • Develop strategies to promote widespread engagement and systemic change
We see this as a possible turning point, an opportunity to generate approaches that empower all of us as stewards of our scientific ecosystem.

A document summarizing the main themes from the workshop will be assembled and made publicly available.

The goal of the NSF-funded Research Coordination Network: "Broadening and Energizing the Maize Genetics Research Community" (IOS-1748978) is to accelerate maize research into the next decade through planned activities and by encouraging community growth and interaction. The RCN aims to stimulate community dialogue of scientists from all backgrounds and to provide recommendations for new ways of broadening the maize research community. This workshop is in partnership consulting with Mariama S. Boney, LMSW, CAE, CPEC and CEO of Achieve More LLC.

This workshop is organized by the Maize Genetics Cooperation Committee on Outreach, Diversity, Inclusion and Education (CODIE) and supported by funding from NSF RCN grant IOS-1748978 and the Maize Genetics Cooperation, Inc. The workshop is being organized and facilitated in partnership with Achieve More LLC.
