2024 Maize Genetics Meeting Financial Aid:

MaGNET/EIA/DB financial aid applicants: If you apply for a financial aid award then please do not register for the meeting until after you receive notification about whether your application was accepted or not. All awardees will receive a discount code that will waive the registration fee when they do register.

There are six types of financial aid for the 66th Annual Maize Genetics Meeting:

1) Roots & Shoots Travel Award:

Applications are now closed.

The NSF-funded LEAPS: RCN: ROOT & SHOOT (Rooting Out Oppression Together and SHaring Our Outcomes Transparently) aims to transform plant science to become more equitable and inclusive. Part of this mission involves building strong connections with organizations that support people of marginalized identities, particularly members of SACNAS and MANRRS.

To this end, this project has funds to support a limited number of travel awards to help defray the costs of attending a plant-science conference for student/mentor pairs affiliated with SACNAS or MANRRS. Successful applicants will be reimbursed up to $3000 (per pair) for appropriate travel-related costs incurred by attending one of the designated plant science conferences. International travel is not eligible for reimbursement. For more information click the button below!

2) MaGNET:

Applications are now closed.

The MaGNET Awards program will provide competitive support for attendance at the Meeting, for members of underrepresented groups, as well as for faculty mentors accompanying eligible students. We will accept MaGNET applications from October 18th, 2023 to November 22nd, 2023.

MaGNET Awards will cover the cost of registration for the conference. The awardee will be paired with an experienced Maize Mentor, who will help the awardee navigate the conference. During the conference, MaGNET awardees will have opportunities to interact with peers, invited speakers, and will be welcomed by the maize community.

Eligible applicants include: undergraduate students; graduate students; postdoctoral researchers; and early-career faculty and scientists. Applicants must be either citizens or permanent residents of the USA; or employed at a U.S. institution, and should belong to a group traditionally underrepresented in science. First-time conference attendees are encouraged to apply.

3) Expanding Institutional Access (EIA)

Applications are now closed.

The EIA award will provide support to attend the Maize Genetics Meeting. We will accept EIA applications from October 18th, 2023 to November 22nd, 2023.

This program seeks to recruit and retain scientists from diverse institutions including community colleges, primarily undergraduate and masters granting institutions into the maize research community by encouraging their attendance at the annual Maize Genetics Meeting. The program provides an opportunity for awardees to learn about maize genetics through connecting with scientists in the maize genetics community, explore potential collaborations, and develop career contacts.

Eligible applicants include: undergraduate students; graduate students and faculty from non-R1 institutions. Applicants must be either citizens or permanent residents of the USA; or employed at a U.S. institution. First-time conference attendees are encouraged to apply.

4) Disciplinary Breadth (DB)

Applications are now closed.

The DB award will provide support for researchers in plant-related disciplines to attend the Maize Genetics Meeting. We will accept DB applications from October 18th, 2023 to November 22nd, 2023.

This program seeks to recruit and retain scientists (advanced graduate students, post-docs, and early-career faculty) from plant-related disciplines into the maize research community by encouraging their attendance at the annual Maize Genetics Meeting. The program provides an opportunity for researchers from diverse disciplines that have potential to enrich the maize community to learn about maize genetics by connecting with scientists in the maize genetics community, explore potential collaborations, and develop career contacts.

Eligible applicants include: researchers (including graduate students, post-docs, and early-career faculty) from a plant-related discipline and undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs from historically underrepresented groups regardless of discipline. Applicants must be either citizens or permanent residents of the USA; or employed at a U.S. institution. First-time conference attendees are encouraged to apply.

5) Student Hotel Support:

Application deadline is January 3, 2024!

The MGC strives to make meeting attendance accessible to students.

Each year the MGM steering committee works to raise money to support students at the conference. If fundraising efforts are successful as in previous years, then one-half of a double occupancy hotel room for each qualified student will be paid for upon check out. To qualify, students need to apply for hotel support using the link below, reserve a double occupancy room in the hotel block, register for the meeting, and pay their student registration fee by Dec. 22. The hotel room will not be paid for if the student stays at a different hotel. Students who live in the Raleigh area and prefer to stay at their own homes are not required to reserve a hotel room.

In addition to student hotel support, students eligible for the other financial aid awards listed on this page are strongly encouraged to apply for them to have additional costs covered.

Note: International students attending the meeting in-person are eligible to apply for this award.

This 2024 award program will provide immediate digital access to recorded talks from the in-person conference for international awardees at no cost.

Eligibility: Researchers from countries that are historically under-represented at the Maize Meeting and/or who may face financial challenges in paying registration fees. Priority will be given to applicants who have demonstrated financial need.

Benefits: Awardees will have access to all recorded talks from the in-person conference.
